​​The Little Sisters confronted to severe difficulties !

The primary source of these severe difficulties results from the incoherent position of Mgr Thierry Scherrer, bishop of Laval, who advocated and promoted the merger of congregational retirement homes but subsequently ordered these institutions to split, with no reasonable grounds and without taking into consideration the position of the Little Sisters of Mary Mother of the Redeemer, of the administrators, or the experts’ opinions. The relations deteriorated quickly… Although this conflict falls within the jurisdiction of civil law, Mgr Scherrer then exercised his power as a bishop, by issuing a canonical precept, in order to impose to the Little sisters the obligation to accept the split.

During the same period, the Congregation had to receive two canonical visitors, sent by the bishop, in anticipation of the General Chapter of the Little Sisters. Much to their surprise, this visit’s report was a complete caricature and did not reflect in any way the reality lived by the Sisters.

​

Whereupon the roman dicastery commissioned three apostolic visitors  and decided to suspend the central government of the congregation, without agreeing to the follow-up / additional visit asked for by the Little Sisters of Mary Mother of the Redeemer, as part of an appeal.

​

An appeal was immediately lodged by the Congregation before the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature in Rome, accompanied by a request for suspensive effect. (highest judicial authority in the Catholic Church apart from the Pope himself).
